For Pepper-Edu's first masterclass, we are very lucky to have gained support from Professor Grindrod from Mathematics Department in University of Oxford. In the two hours, we explored the cutting-edge topics in the world of mathematics and AI, received great advice on productive and creative work and study strategies, learnt about Oxford application procedures in general and heard Professor's personal stories in academic and entrepreneurial world. It is very inspiring.
One of the most important pieces of advice that I learnt from Professor Grindrod's talk is the importance of finding your golden hours in the day and get in the zone of high concentration, where you can gain more creativity, depth and inspiration.
What my students find inspiring is that the value of they way students think, rather than gettign the right answers. Students from East Asian education background were mostly trained to believe the 'correctness' of their answers is what counts. But Oxford university values more on the way of thinking which indicates the students' potential to learn and progress. This changed students' view on the focus of their study.
In this Masterclass, we have students from different ages, ranging from prep school age to A-Level age. Our students also have different areas of interest and different position as in Maths lessons. Professor Grinrod's talk fits all of them very well. Students who loves maths got a better view of where maths study can lead them towards. Students who struggles with Maths got motivated and inspired.
